Our Why

Ontario has been experiencing ongoing capacity pressures for the treatment of complex
malignant hematology services for several years. This complex and specialized
procedure is an important part of treatment for people with Lymphoma, Leukemia and
Myeloma.
The transplant therapy involves removing some of the patients’ blood stem cells, getting
a high dose of chemotherapy, and then re-infusing stem cells back afterwards. The re-
infused stem cells act as a rescue and help re-grow blood cells after the high dose of
chemotherapy.

This transplant program will extend and save lives!

To further build on the successful implementation of stem transplantation at Grand River
Hospital (Waterloo Regional Health Network) the team requires both capital and
operational funds to upgrade lab and IT systems, purchase critical equipment and invest
in complex staff education.
The successful launch of the Grand River (WRHN) stem cell program in 2024 makes it
one of only two community hospitals in Ontario to provide stem cell transplants locally.
