My name is Sarah and I was 38 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sitting in my doctor’s office, I remember the feeling of unease that crept in when I heard the awful news: “You have cancer.” Three words and my life was changed forever.
I live about one hour and 15 minutes outside of Kitchener. In the days, weeks, and months following my diagnosis, I travelled to WRHN Cancer Centre multiple times for scans and treatment, including eight rounds of chemotherapy and 20 radiation sessions.
As an out-of-town patient, the care I received at WRHN was beyond anything I expected. Staff went out of their way to coordinate my appointments to limit my travel. They all helped make long days feel a little lighter with humour, love, and unwavering support.
Today, I’m happy to say I’m doing well. When I look back on my cancer journey, what stands out is that I never felt alone – not just because my family and my wonderful team of nurses and doctors were with me, but because people like you were with me too.
Every chemo chair I sat in for treatment, every piece of equipment used in my care, every small comfort that made those long hours bearable, they were made possible by donors across our communities: neighbours who may never meet the patients they’re helping, but choose to give anyway.
Know that when you support WRHN Foundation and the Tour de Elora, it truly makes a difference in someone’s care.
Thank you.
