Wellington Skin Clinic's Why

Wellington Skin Clinic's Why

I’m Dr. Melanie Maurus, a family and emergency physician with a focused practice in dermatology and the founder of Wellington Skin Clinic in Fergus.

Cancer has touched my family more than once, including my stepfather’s experience with melanoma. He also battled lymphoma and colon cancer, and sadly, it was colon cancer that ultimately took his life. He was a fighter throughout it all. I know what it feels like to hear that someone you love has cancer and to worry about what comes next. I also know the impact of watching someone you love go through that fight and, ultimately, losing them to it. That experience stays with me in my work.

As a family doctor and ER physician, I care for people affected by cancer in many different ways. At Wellington Skin Clinic, I provide skin cancer screening and mole mapping, and I diagnose skin cancers every day. Whether I’m speaking with a patient about a new diagnosis or sitting with my own family, I’m reminded that cancer affects far more than the person receiving treatment.

That is why I’m proud to have Wellington Skin Clinic join Beauty for Hope. Breast cancer is different from the cancers I most often diagnose at the clinic, but I understand how much patients and families depend on skilled, compassionate care close to home. Supporting breast cancer care at Waterloo Regional Health Network is a meaningful way for our team to stand behind them.

During the campaign, we’re donating 10% of the profits from participating microneedling and chemical peel treatments. We’re also including a complimentary neck or back-of-hands treatment add-on with those services.

I’m grateful to Dr. Brace for bringing local clinics together for this cause. For me, participating in Beauty for Hope is also a way to honour my stepfather’s memory while supporting those in our community who are facing breast cancer and the families walking alongside them. To everyone taking part in Beauty for Hope: thank you for helping care for our neighbours when they need it most.
