My dad was and will forever be my role model

My dad always made me feel special. He was an unwavering presence in my life who was always there for me, whether it was helping me ride a bike, learning to tie a tie, or going on our weekly walks after dinner having both serious and nonserious conversations. My dad always showed me how to lead with integrity and put others before myself.

On January 3, 2024, my dad, who had been healthy and active his entire life, was diagnosed with a rare terminal neuroendocrine cancer and given a short timeline to live. To say my family was shocked and devastated is an understatement.

We are very blessed to live close to the Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) Cancer Center. When my father began treatment there shortly after the diagnosis, my family and I attended appointments with him including radiation and chemotherapy. The staff were nothing short of amazing, treating us with dignity and care. At one chemo session, my dad turned to me and said, "You know, we're so fortunate we get to come here. Lots of people don't get to live so close to an amazing place like this”.

On May 31, 2024, only 5 months after getting diagnosed, my dad very suddenly passed away from cancer. He bravely fought this unimaginable fate until the very end with a fighter mentality. As I struggle with the grief of losing him, I remember the impact my dad had on not only me and my family, but the people in this community.

On my dad’s birthday, July 24, 2025, I will run 10 km from Waterloo YMCA to Kitchener YMCA to raise money for chemotherapy chairs at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) in his memory. The Cancer Centre urgently needs these chairs, as several are outdated and continue to cause patients discomfort during treatment. With your help, we can reach my $10,000 goal.

Your contribution will ensure all patients receive treatment in a more comfortable, supportive environment, positively impacting their well-being and recovery. Together, we can continue to elevate the level of care at our Cancer Centre and improve the overall patient experience.
